Today was Mayor for a Day—a program with Youth Central and the Mayor's Youth Council that gives a lucky Calgary student the opportunity to shadow Mayor Nenshi for a day. This year’s student is Erin Novakowski. Erin is a grade nine student from St. Matthew School. To be selected for this opportunity, Erin produced a video essay about three things she’d do for Calgary if elected mayor. Her three ideas included the importance of increased wheelchair accessibility throughout the city, the need for more information about how to help the homeless, and advancing composting opportunities for all Calgarians.
Throughout the day, she will join Mayor (for a Day) Erin joined Mayor Nenshi in meetings, met with her Councillor Peter Demong, and met with members of City staff involved with the issues that are important to her. As part of her day, she also did a few interviews with media to simulate a common experience had by all politicians.
