Council approves budget, freezing tax rate

Post Date: Monday, November 21, 2016

Friends, today is a big deal. I’m proud that your City Council unanimously approved the latest budget—effectively freezing the 2017 property tax rate for home-owners and businesses.

No one is immune to our current economic downturn. Every one of us knows the pain of unemployment and tight budgets. As a City, your municipal government has a role to play in lessening that pain. We can invest in ways that create jobs. We can be more efficient in the work we do to make this city a great place in which to live and work. And we can do all this without a deficit and among the lowest taxes in the country.

The updated budget includes $184 million in efficiencies. The City of Calgary is in solid financial position, and smart management means we’re able to respond to the expectations of citizens and the demands of the economy. My colleagues definitely deserve our thanks for building a budget that truly serves all Calgarians.

While the budget was passed, Council’s review of the business plans for every City department continue. Unlike other orders of government, your municipal government goes through every line of the budget and business plans over the course of a week on live TV. It may take time, but it’s the best way to ensure an open and accountable government... and the best way to ensure all citizens get the city of opportunity they deserve.
